Winter Season
November – February
Thailand's tropical climate is one of the many reasons it attracts visitors from all over the world. Warm, sunny and inviting all year round, Thailand's weather plays a huge role in determining travel plans for everything from beach getaways to jungle treks. While the country enjoys sunshine year-round, it's important to understand the seasonal patterns to make the most of your visit. Thailand's weather can generally be divided into three seasons: hot, rainy and cool – although "cool" is a relative term, as temperatures rarely drop below 25°C (77°F) in most regions.
Temperatures rise during this time, especially in April, which is typically the hottest month. Expect highs of 35–40°C (95–104°F) in many parts of the country. It is a popular time for beach holidays and also when Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival, takes place.
This season is characterized by the southwest monsoon, which brings short but heavy showers, usually in the afternoon or evening. Although the rain can be heavy, it usually does not last all day and the landscape becomes lush and green. Travel is still possible and many enjoy the quieter atmosphere and lower prices.
Three Things to Remember
November to February
The cool season is considered the most comfortable time to visit. It offers pleasant temperatures, lower humidity and generally dry air – ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. This is the peak tourist season, especially in destinations such as Chiang Mai and Bangkok.
Regional differences
Thailand's long, narrow geography means that the weather can vary greatly from region to region. The southern coast experiences two distinct monsoon patterns, which affect the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea at different times.
May to October rainfall
Phuket experiences more rain from May to October due to the southwest monsoon hitting the Andaman Sea coast. Plan accordingly when choosing between the Gulf and Andaman sides of the peninsula.
