Overview

Chiang Rai is Thailand's northernmost gem, a peaceful province where rolling green mountains meet the borders of Myanmar and Laos at the legendary Golden Triangle. The city has earned a reputation as an open-air art gallery — the otherworldly White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) dazzles with its mirror-glass facade, the Blue Temple captivates with vivid sapphire interiors, and the Black House (Baan Dam) showcases a hauntingly beautiful collection of dark art. Beyond the landmarks, Chiang Rai offers some of Thailand's most rewarding nature experiences: trek through highland tea plantations at Doi Mae Salong, explore the flower gardens of Doi Tung, or cruise along the Mekong River as the sun sets over three countries. The cool mountain climate, vibrant night bazaars, and the genuine warmth of the local Lanna and hill-tribe communities make Chiang Rai a destination that rewards slow, unhurried exploration.

History

Chiang Rai was founded in 1262 by King Mangrai and served as the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Today, it blends ancient heritage with contemporary art and cultural experiences.
