"Ad Astra — To the Stars": Bangkok's Landmark International School with Over Six Decades of Excellence
When it comes to Tier 1 international schools in Bangkok, Ruamrudee International School (RIS) consistently stands among the finest. And with good reason — this institution has been shaping well-rounded global citizens since 1957, guided by a philosophy that has never wavered: to nurture students in their "Head, Hands, and Heart."
History & Foundation
The name "Ruamrudee" is a Thai word meaning "union of hearts," which perfectly captures the school's philosophy of welcoming all children into an environment of care and compassion. Founded in 1957 by the Redemptorist Fathers of Thailand, what began as four modest wooden classrooms behind Holy Redeemer Church has grown into one of Thailand's most distinguished international institutions, now serving over 1,400 students from across the globe.
Campus & World-Class Facilities
The Minburi campus occupies a vast 29-acre site, with separate buildings for each school section, a competition-sized swimming pool, and modern sports and arts facilities that are hard to match in high-rise city-center schools. Eltschool Facilities include a 100x50 metre FIFA-certified artificial turf football pitch, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, multiple gymnasiums, two libraries, a performing arts centre, mini-theatres, an art gallery, and fully equipped science and computer labs.
Today, RIS operates across four campuses: the flagship Minburi Campus, the Ratchapruek Campus (Nonthaburi, opened 2019), Early Years Campus (Ramintra area), and the newly opened RIS Phuket (2024).
Curriculum & Academic Excellence
RIS masterfully balances a cutting-edge hybrid curriculum combining American, IB, and AP programs, giving students remarkable flexibility in shaping their academic journey. It is one of the very few international schools in Southeast Asia to offer both the IB and AP programs simultaneously.
The results speak for themselves: the IB Class of 2025 achieved a 97% pass rate with an average score of 34 points — well above the world average of approximately 30 — with the highest individual score reaching a perfect 45.
RIS graduates are regularly admitted to the world's most prestigious universities, including Harvard, Stanford, Yale, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and University College London.
Beyond the Classroom
RIS is a member of the Bangkok International School Athletic Conference (BISAC) and fields 70 teams across both domestic and international athletic competitions, covering sports such as badminton, basketball, swimming, football, cross country, and cheerleading. The Extended Day Programme (EDP) further enriches student life with sports, visual and performing arts, language classes, and community service clubs including Habitat for Humanity and UNICEF.
Values & Community
The school's guiding "Principles of Phoenix" — focusing on Head, Hands, and Heart — define how RIS approaches the growth of each student in every dimension of life. While rooted in Catholic tradition, RIS warmly welcomes students of all faiths and backgrounds within a truly inclusive and interfaith community.
Teachers at RIS stay for an average of 8 years — one of the highest retention rates among international schools — a testament to the deep commitment of faculty to their students and the school community.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) — play-based learning focused on communication, social development, and early literacy and numeracy.
National Curriculum of England with a thematic and cross-curricular approach, focusing on core subjects, creativity, and inquiry-based learning.
Broad and balanced curriculum taught by specialist teachers, building strong academic foundations across multiple subjects.
Two-year IGCSE programme with a combination of core and optional subjects, leading to internationally recognised qualifications.
A-Level programme with 3–5 subjects, including Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and structured university preparation support.
